Why does RHEL 8.4/8.5 and RHEL 9.0 do not display the GUI with Intel E810 Westport Channel Adapter Enabled in BIOS Settings?

Issue

Booting fails while trying to boot with Westport Channel adapter(Intel E810 adapter) enabled in BIOS settings.
The system fails to load the GUI and is seen stuck indefinitely.

Steps to reproduce:

  • Connect Westport Channel adapter(Intel E810 adapter)
  • Enable the slot in BIOS Settings
  • Install RHEL 8.4 , RHEL 8.5, or RHEL 9.0
  • Try to boot into OS after installation
  • Boot to OS fails with system get stuck on loading page

Expected behavior:

  • Boot to OS should be fine with or without enabling Westport Channel adapter in BIOS settings.

This issue is currently seen on some DELL systems which ship with Westport Channel adapter.

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0
  • Westport Channel Adapter Network card (Intel E810)
