How to use distributed transactions between JBoss application servers

Issue

Two, or even more, different applications that are deployed in the same JBoss instance should be separated.
Or the applications should be installed separate anyway.
The standard configuration does not support that a transaction span both applications.

Scenario

Application #1 calls application #2 by using the Remote interface.
Each application contains persistent data and might use JCA connectors with XA implementation

What needs to be configured to achieve distributed transactions?
Are there any differences to be considered?
Is it possible to use different JBoss versions?
