rhel7.7: KVM guests cannot boot if they have multiple logical cpus and enable irqbalance

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

We installed a RHEL 5.3 guest OS on RHEL 7.7 KVM host environment. Once the guest os booted, the os hung up immediately during a system boot. We concluded the irqbalance service causes the hang-up. We collected the vmcore while this hang-up occurred. Then we examined the vmcore. The following condition happened:

After examination of the vmcore, we think this wait is because the interrupts for IRQ10/IRQ11 were not issued for a long time.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.7
  • kernels before kernel-3.10.0-1062.66.1.el7
  • KVM
