How can I make my VNC session more responsive?

The less data that is being transmitted across a network the more responsive the session will appear.
By using a solid color for the desktop background, large squares of repeated color can be compressed.
To set a solid color for the background, run the following commands:
gconftool-2 --type string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_options none
