RHEL6: Applications or Tools Hang on ext4 Filesystem

Issue

  • Filesystem deadlock due to delayed allocation unable to allocate disk space
    • sysreq c must be used (or the system rebooted) to recover control
  • File system commands hang or fail to complete
    • Hung commands appear as blocked in ps or top
  • Application hangs and can not be killed (even with kill -9 <pid>)
  • service <application> start|stop|restart commands fail to complete
