TCP sockets stuck in FIN-WAIT-1 or CLOSING state forever

Issue

  • Sometimes when the server actively closes a TCP Connection it transitions into the CLOSING state and the TCP Connection hangs in this state forever.
  • The TCP Connection is then no longer owned by any process, so a kind of "zombie".

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and 9
    • Kernels from kernel-4.18.0-152.el8
    • TCP
