Why is it not possible to use devices /dev/st0[a,l,m] and /dev/nst0[a,l,m] in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5?

Issue

After the tape drive and SAS cable is connected to the server, only the device /dev/st0 or /dev/nst0 can be used, the devices /dev/st0a, /dev/st0l, /dev/st0m and the devices /dev/nst0a, /dev/nst0l, /dev/nst0m cannot be used.
