Why does haldaemon service exit automatically after completing scan?

Issue

haldaemon will activate on startup, then it hangs and fails. Server is running on standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 build using Red Hat multipathing software. Running the process manually as follows, completes the intial scan before appearing to exit.

# /usr/sbin/hald  --daemon=no  --verbose=yes  --use-syslog
```
