What is the egress network bandwidth of an OpenShift cluster?
Environment
- Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.
Resolution
- 1 Gbps of network throughput can be handled by OpenShift with an optimal performance. However, there are ways to improve this if a higher bandwidth is required. See Optimizing networking for more information.
Root Cause
-
This limitation is due to Geneve, which is the encapsulation protocol used by Kubernetes Open Virtual Network.
- For OpenShift SDN, deprecated in version 4.14 and removed in version 4.17, the protocol used was VXLAN instead, whose bandwidth limitations were similar to Geneve.
