Keberized NFS home directory fails to mount and rpc-gssd.service has status failed

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

When logging on to our server this morning, we noticed that logons were unacceptably slow. After a long time, a prompt appears, followed by a message:

Could not chdir to home directory /home/<user>: No such file or directory

Upon inspection, rpc-gssd.service has status failed. When we start this service, everything works again.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and 8
    • seen on nfs-utils-1.3.0-0.66.el7_8.x86_64 and nfs-utils-1.3.0-0.68.el7.x86_64
  • NFS client with kerberos (sec=krb5)
