Kernel panicked on boot and 'chroot /mnt/sysimage' command in rescue mode fails with 'chroot failed to run command /bin/sh no such file or directory' error

Issue

• Kernel panicked on boot with kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! visible on the console. Once booted into the linux rescue environment, the following message was observed when attempting to issue a chroot /mnt/sysimage:

    # chroot /mnt/sysimage
    chroot failed to run command /bin/sh no such file or directory
