CUPS may be unable to print some PDF documents on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

Some PDF 1.6 files may not print. Turning on debug logging in CUPS, as described in How to enable and capture CUPS debugging logs shows the following messages in
/var/log/cups/error_log

After updating CUPS, along with other RPMs, customer reported that their application is not able to print PDF files. The following messages were observed in
