Viewing and printing some PDF 1.6 documents may not work in Red hat Enterprise Linux

Issue

  • The evince utility in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 may not be able to open PDF 1.6 documents. Evince may prompt for password even if the actual document is not password protected and may throw the following error:

    Error: Unsupported version/revision (4/4) of Standard security handler
    Error: Incorrect password
    
  • CUPS may not be able to print PDF 1.6 documents on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.
    The CUPS error_log shows the following errors when the Log Level is set to debugging as described in How to enable and capture CUPS debugging logs

    D [03/May/2011:13:42:13 +1000] [Job 3909246] Error: PDF version 1.6 -- xpdf supports version 1.5 (continuing anyway)
    D [03/May/2011:13:42:13 +1000] [Job 3909246] Error: Unsupported version/revision (4/4) of Standard security handler
