device-mapper-multipath fails to map devices accessed via cciss controller in RHEL 5

Issue

  • multipath does not work on HP storage with CCISS driver, even after updating to RHEL5.6 device-mapper-multipath
  • multipath command running on top CCISS device does not create multipath map

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
  • device-mapper-multipath prior to release 0.4.7-48.el5
  • Storage devices accessed via HP Smart Array cciss controller
  • Storage device configured (automatically or manually in /etc/multipath.conf) to use the mpath_prio_alua priority callout
