Squid cachemgr.cgi fails authentication even though password and username are provided correctly

Issue

After upgrading squid to squid-3.5.20-15 cachemgr.cgi stops authorizing users for the menu. The menu can be accessed, but links inside are inaccessible with error stating invalid credentials.

Following error message can be observed in the logs:

2020/10/12 09:33:17.828 cache.example.com | CacheManager: cachemaster=203.0.113.1:3128 remote=203.0.113.1:43008 FD 10 flags=1: incorrect password for 'info'
