Can I upgrade IdM/IPA skipping point releases?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- Identity Management (IPA/IdM)
Issue
Can I upgrade IdM/IPA, skipping point releases?
Resolution
Red Hat recommends upgrading to the next point release version only. Upgrade is being tested only from previous minor version to the next one, and upgrading from earlier minor releases skipping several steps can cause issues.
For example, if we wanted to upgrade from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3 to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.6, the correct path would be:
7.3 --> 7.4 --> 7.5 --> 7.6
- Note
Downgrading Identity Management packages is not supported. Do not ever run the
# yum downgrade
command on any of the ipa-*
packages.

Note
If you would like to tie a system to a specific update of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, please see this article:

Note
Red Hat recommends updating the whole system using
# yum update
instead of only updating IPA packages. IPA is only tested with corresponding system packages, and upgrading only IPA packages can cause unexpected issues.
Root Cause
Upgrading across multiple point releases of Red Hat Enterprise Linux has the potential to cause a lot of issues in IPA / IDM.
