RHEL 8.2 kernel tainted with Soft Lockup traces (value 16384) on IBM Power System E980 (9080-M9S)

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • On IBM Power E980 systems with a Logical Partition (LPAR) configured with more than 60TB of memory, when the system boots from RHEL 8.2 GA kernel(kernel-4.18.0-193.el8) , soft lockup traces (which cause a kernel taint of 16384) may be observed during the boot procedure from the drmem_init() function.

Though the OS boots properly, these soft lockup traces are still of concern as they may impact either kernel stability or performance.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Power, little endian
  • IBM Power System E980 (9080-M9S) systems equipped with 4x 48-core Power 9 Processors with SMT8, in configurations of up to 1536 logical CPUs and up to 64TB of memory.
