`printers.conf` may be truncated to zero length after unclean RHEL shutdown

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • The CUPS configuration file /etc/printers.conf frequently gets truncated to zero length after unclean shutdowns.
  • We have found that the printers.conf configuration file truncated after our application went down suddenly. The application has scripts to stop printing forcefully while going down and after reboot found that printers configuration file /etc/cups/printers.conf is zero size.
  • The server rebooted. Once the server came up again, CUPS printers.conf was empty.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.4.2
