Why backup is failing to Tape Drive ?

Issue

  • Backup is failing while taking backup to Tape Drive. While checking the status of the Tape Drive, getting below errors
#mt -f /dev/st0 status
/dev/st0: Inappropriate ioctl for device

  • There were no changes in the Hardware or Software. However, power had went off for some time, and after starting the power, Tape Drive was inaccessible.

  • Tape drive is not detected in the system and the status on it fails with the above error.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • tape device
