Why does yppasswd update /etc/passwd when I'm using NIS with passwd.adjunct on Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

Issue

On Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) when I use passwd.adjunct maps and I update my password using yppasswd it updates /etc/passwd and not my /var/yp/passwd.adjunct file.
