Why can't I handle files greater than 2 GB in size with both Unix File I/O and Standard I/O in 32-bit systems?

Normally 32-bit systems can not handle files greater than 2 GB in size (64-bit systems are not limited in this way.) Red Hat Enterprise Linux permits this through use of the LFS system (Large File Support), which requires cooperation from the kernel, in particular for each kind of file system, and from libc. All major modern file systems under use in Red Hat Enterprise Linux now support this.<...>
