Unable to start Oracle database due to IO errors

While starting the Oracle database following error messages are observed and the database could not be started:
ORA-19502: wtite error on file "/opt/oracle/logfile.ctl", block number 659 (block size=16384) ORA-27072: File I/O error [...] LGWR (ospid: 2444): terminating the instance due to error 19502
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2
- Oracle databse
