RHEL: systemd-udevd: Error changing net interface name 'eth2' to 'eno2': File exists

Issue

  • The following NIC renaming errors occur:
Mar 23 18:38:55 hostname systemd-udevd[328]: Error changing net interface name 'eth2' to 'eno2': File exists
Mar 23 18:38:55 hostname systemd-udevd[328]: could not rename interface '5' from 'eth2' to 'eno2': File exists
Mar 23 18:38:55 hostname systemd-udevd[329]: Error changing net interface name 'eth0' to 'eno1': File exists
Mar 23 18:38:55 hostname systemd-udevd[329]: could not rename interface '2' from 'eth0' to 'eno1': File exists
  • Instead of having interfaces eno1, eno2, eno3 and eno4, the system has has eno1, eno2, eth1 and eth2.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and 8
  • 2 port onboard igb NIC
  • 2 port onboard i40e NIC
