'ls' command on a VM shows 'Input/output error'

Issue

• ls command on a mount point on VMware guest machine shows IO errors:

  $ mount | grep sdb
  /dev/sdb on /mnt/sdb type ext4 (rw)
  $ cd  /mnt/sdb
  $ ls -la
  ls: reading directory .: Input/output error
  total 0
