automount dead but subsys locked

Issue

We get this message when checking the status for the autofs service:

automount dead but subsys locked

And when we try service autofs start the output is the following:

Starting automount: automount: program is already running.

We tried to the following without positive results:
1. rm -rf /var/lock/subsys/autofs
2. service autofs restart
