When I run up2date after removing redhat-release package, I get an error 'Could not determine what version of Red Hat Linux you are running'.

The up2date program queries the RPM database to determine the Red Hat release and version that you are running. The package redhat-release adds the required information in the RPM database when the package is installed. This is why the up2date program does not work when the redhat-release package is removed from the system.
