Why do the JBoss login modules always returns HTTP 401?

Issue

The Login modules always return a 401 HTTP error code, although an underlying server error like LDAP or databse down could have occur. In this case we want to inform our clients with an general technical error (e.g. HTTP 500) instead of a HTTP 401 Unauthorized, because the authentication did not fail.

But this seems to be not possible. What could be a propsed solution to that issue?
