Why doesn't autofs restart on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6?

Issue

  • /etc/init.d/autofs restart does not perform "stop" before performing "start"

    # service autofs restart
Starting automount: automount: program is already running.
                                                           [  OK  ]

  • service autofs restart hasn't actually restarted the automount daemon. Restart only works if the automount daemon isn't running

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • autofs-5.0.5-29.el6
