How can I force a SOAP fault to be returned when JAAS authentication fails?

Issue

I have a JAX-WS endpoint, and I am configuring my JAAS authentication in web.xml and jboss-web.xml. When authentication fails, no SOAP fault is returned; I only get an HTTP 401 (Unautorized) error. How can I force a SOAP fault to be returned?
