AWS Elastic Block Store volumes cannot be used any more after they are tried to be detached due to a pod deletion

Issue

  • AWS Elastic Block Store (EBS) volume detachments do not finish correctly when pods are deleted. For that reason, volumes become unavailable.

  • Following message should show up on kernel logs:

do_IRQ: 4.151 No irq handler for vector (irq -1)

Environment

  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 3.9 on AWS.
