Coreutils sort performance degrades when LANG or LC_ALL is set to en_US.utf8 in Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Coreutils sort performance degrades significantly when the system locale e.g. LANG, LC_ALL, or LC_COLLATE is set toen_US.utf8 (or other locales with full ISO 14651 sorting rules). When the locale is set to C, the performance of sort improves significantly.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) all versions.
  • Specifically visible for Coreutils commands.
