pxelinux.0 from syslinux distributed with RHEL6 has issues with HP BL460c gen8 servers

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

We use pxe boot to deploy new servers. The image used is the pxelinux.0 from the RHEL6 syslinux RPM.
Our configuration makes use of menu.c32 to display a boot menu on start-up.
When using it to deploy an HP blade BL460c gen8 we encountered two problems:
1. In many cases the boot menu displayed by pxelinux 'freezes';
2. When trying to boot from the local disk from the pxe (using localboot 0), the server throws an error message of Illegal OpCode with a red screen.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • pxelinux.0 from syslinux-4.02-4.el6.x86_64
  • HP BL460c gen8 wiht BIOS versions I31 05/30/2012 and I31 07/15/2012
