Why do we periodically see 'netlink: X bytes leftover after parsing attributes.' in syslog on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4?

Issue

  • During bootup and at indeterminate times afterward, the latest RHEL 6.4 x86_64 kernel (2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86_64), shows repeated entries of the following lines in dmesg and /var/log/messages:
netlink: 4 bytes leftover after parsing attributes.
netlink: 8 bytes leftover after parsing attributes.
