Why does my Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) system swap despite of having free RAM?
Issue
- End user observes that despite of having free RAM and potentially free-able cache, some of the swap space of the system has been occupied.
- The monitoring system is throwing alerts of swap being used even when there is plenty of RAM left to be touched. Shouldn't the system use free memory which is way faster than inherently slow swap space.
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) all versions.
