Backend refuses all https connections from Apache httpd proxy

Issue

  • When configured to proxy through https, backend just closes the connection after Apache httpd sends ClientHello. Error log shows:

    [Mon Mar 18 10:48:15.693723 2019] [proxy_http:error] [pid 12132] (103)Software caused connection abort: [client 10.1.1.10:54308] AH01102: error reading status line from remote server mybackend:443, referer: https://mysite.example.org/application/index.asp
