'vpd r/w failed' message printed by kernel in RHEL 6 and RHEL 7

Issue

  • The "vpd r/w failed" message below is printed in dmesg, when "lspci -vv" is run:

    0000:b0:00.0: vpd r/w failed,  This is likely a firmware bug on this device,  Contact the card vendor for a firmware update
    
  • sosreport invokes "lspci -vv" and can also cause this message.
