Non-root users are unable to ping

Issue

  • When logged in as the root user we are able to execute the ping command. If we change to a non-root (standard) user and execute the ping command it fails with error ping: socket: Operation not permitted.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.5 and earlier (including RHEL 7, 6, 5)
  • ping command from iputils package
