When I attempt to start the Synaptics program, syndaemon, why does it fail with the error "Can't access shared memory area. SHMConfig disabled?"

The Synaptics package includes the syndaemon program that disables notebook or laptop touchpad devices while the keyboard is in use. The syndaemon communicates with the Synaptics touchpad driver through a shared memory area established by the driver.
