VMware randomly changes boot order after virtual hardware change

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • We recently added virtual hardware to the guest and the guest will no longer boot up.
  • When using the rescue ISO, the boot disk is seen as 4:0:0:0 aka /dev/sdt, although the vm has set the first disk to 0:0:0.
  • When a disc is attached to the system, from time to time, the disc changes around, it changes to /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc or /dev/sdh.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6, 7
  • VMware ESX
  • VMware Workstation
