Red Hat Directory Server, Distributed Numeric Assignment operations error and failure for multiple backends

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

The configuration of the Distributed Numeric Assignment (DNA) plug-in in the Red Hat Directory Server (RHDS) may need some tuning, or the proper entry suffixes need to be created when an LDAP ADD operation generates an error.

In this case, multiple backends were defined for a top suffix, and adding a new entry for a posixGroup gidNumber attribute resulted in an operation error, like below, for an LDAP ADD operation:

adding new entry "cn=..,ou=..,dc=.."
ldapmodify: Operations error (1)
additional info: Allocation of a new value for gidnumber failed! Unable
to proceed.

and in the error log with plug-in verbose log:

[05/Aug/2010:15:51:15 -0700] - ERROR: The sort control cannot be processed when
more than one backend is involved. VLV indexes that will never be used should
be removed.
[05/Aug/2010:15:51:15 -0700] dna-plugin - dna_get_next_value: failed to
allocate a new ID!!
[05/Aug/2010:15:51:15 -0700] dna-plugin - dna_pre_op: operation failure [1]
