Host name validation errors - route must be no more than 63 characters

Issue

  • We're seeing this error from the OpenShift router:

    E1003 14:27:04.374282 1 router_controller.go:311] host name validation errors: spec.host: Invalid value: "inv-dev-eods-portfolio-reference-publisher-adapter-olyra-110-34-208.test.example.com": must be no more than 63 characters

  • Some of our applications have very long names, and when prefixed with namespace and domain, it gets even longer and exceeds 63 chars limit for host names in OpenShift.

  • Why 63 bytes of limit on DNS label is imposed?
