Ext4 filesystem without journal shows as "not clean" while being mounted

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When an ext4 filesystem without a journal is mounted, commands such as tune2fs or dumpe2fs report its state as not clean:

    # tune2fs -l /dev/device-name |grep "^Filesystem state"
    Filesystem state: not clean

  • After the filesystem is unmounted, its state returns to clean.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Ext4 Filesystem
