How can I enable or change the TCP Keepalive values for a connection when the application does not allow it

Issue

  • The application connection is going through a firewall with with a short timeout and the firewall is forcing the connection to close when the connection is idle longer than that timeout

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)
  • Firewall or other connection-tracking middle box or network device with a timeout
