Cannot open libreadline.so.5 when running a program

Issue

I am getting the following error when attempting to run a program I used to run in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. How can I prevent it?

error while loading shared libraries: libreadline.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
