The server is detecting only a few scsi devices out of many at system boot (because of scsi version 2 devices)

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • We are not able to detect all the scsi devices even on the booted system unless we are manually rescanning it with rescan-scsi-bus.sh
  • System cannot mount one of the filesystems at boot time due to this
  • System only scans two SCSI devices out of eight total at boot time
  • During the boot process, 1 of the 9 SAN LUNs is not visible resulting in the system going into maintenance mode
  • There are 50 luns assigned to this server and was working good. Currently there are only 8 luns showing in the server.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 (encountered at least in 7.3, 7.4 and 7.6, but it is expected to affect all releases)
  • Storage devices conforming to scsi version 2
  • Commonly encountered with HITACHI, OPEN-V storage arrays and LUNs configured for solaris instead of linux (frequently reporting the vendor, model: HITACHI ,OPEN-V      -SUN).
