OpenShift nodes in AWS do not keep persistent labels after shut down

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After upgrading from OpenShift 3.7 to 3.9, we shut down our compute nodes to resize from r4.large to r4.xlarge. When the nodes came back up, they lost their compute=true role.
  • If a node is stopped (either via shutdown within the node or via AWS console with instance state -> stop) the cluster completely forgets anything about the node.
