GNOME 3 hangs after about 49 days of system uptime

Issue

  • When system uptime reaches a multiple1 of approximately 49 days and 17 hours, the GNOME 3 session stops responding to all mouse / keyboard input.

  1. Note: it is related to the uptime and not how long the gdm, Xorg, or gnome-session ( or mutter) processes have been running. ↩︎

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 or earlier
  • GNOME 3.26 or earlier
