Why does files provided by Initscripts and kernel have "ghost" file type on rpm verification errors after upgrading to RHEL 7.5?

Issue

  • After installing/upgrading to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5, the files provided by initscripts and kernel package show file type as ghost on rpm verification.
# rpm -V initscripts 
.M....... g /var/log/dmesg
.M....... g /var/log/dmesg.old 

# rpm -V kernel 
.M....... g /boot/initramfs-3.10.0-693.17.1.el7.x86_64.img 
.M....... g /boot/initramfs-3.10.0-693.21.1.el7.x86_64.img 
.M....... g /boot/initramfs-3.10.0-862.el7.x86_64.img
