With NetworkManager, an 802.1x or MACSEC connection with no secrets will never time out.

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • An 802.1x connection profile never times out and appears stuck waiting for auth even though no secrets are required.
  • The logs show NetworkManager is waiting for secrets, immediately after logging that none are required:

    Mar 01 14:58:20  <info>  device (eth0): state change: config -> need-auth (reason 'none') [50 60 0]
    Mar 01 14:58:20 <info> device (eth0): Cleared secrets, but setting didn't need any secrets.
    Mar 01 14:58:20 <warn> device (eth0): Activation: (ethernet) asking for new secrets

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • NetworkManager 1.10.2
