Why does GRUB Installation fails with error - 'grub2-install: error: /usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi/modinfo.sh doesn't exist' ?

Issue

  • While merging the snapshot lvm volume back to the root lv and installing the grub boot loader using steps in article 65991, we are getting following errors:

    # grub2-install /dev/sda
    grub2-install: error: /usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi/modinfo.sh doesn't exist. Please specify --target or --directory.
    

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3
  • Logical Volume Manager
  • System installed with EFI configuration
